Crochet Bag Base Recipe - How to Knit a Rectangular Bag Base?

Welcome to our series on the Recipe Fairies Blog!

Do you want to knit a rectangular bag base but don't know how to create the corners? This base recipe will teach you the rectangular base.

I used this base for the summery File Tote Bag that I knitted with great pleasure. You can also use the recipe for different bags. Once you figure out the logic, you can change the size as you wish. You can visit our blog post for the bag recipe: File Tote Bag Recipe

    Materials

    • We knit with polyester macrame thread. The thread I use is Ayaz brand, coded 1203, green color. It weighs 100 grams and is 140 meters long.
    • 3 mm crochet hook

    Abbreviations

    • ZN: chain
    • X: single crochet
    • V: increase, that is, two single crochets into a loop
    • 3V: three single crochets into a loop

    Measurement Information

    • The base dimensions are 30*10 cm. If you use different yarn, this dimension may vary.
    • If you want a different size, you can create the base with the same logic by increasing or decreasing the number of chains.

    Notes

    • Our base consists of 7 rows.
    • We knit in a spiral shape without slipping stitches at the end of the row. Therefore, you can use a stitch marker to avoid confusing where the row ends.

    Rectangular Bag Base Recipe

1st Row: We start by making 45 chains. We skip the first chain and start from the second chain, we make 3 single crochets in the same chain, we knit 42 single crochets in each stitch, we make 3 single crochets in the same chain, we knit 42 single crochets in each stitch, we knit 42 single crochets in each stitch .

*We move on to a new row without slipping a stitch. You can put a marker here.

Row 2: We make 3 single crochets into the first stitch. I will call this "3V" for short. We make, we knit 1 single crochet, again 3V, we knit 43 single crochets, 3V, 1 single crochet, 3V, we knit 43 single crochets.

    Row 3: 3V, 3 single crochets, 3V, 44 single crochets, 3V, 3 single crochets, 3V, 44 single crochets

    Row 4: 3V, 5 single crochet i.e. x, 3V, 45 x, 3V, 5 x, 3V, 45 x

    Row 5: 3V, 7 x, 3V, 46 x, 3V, 7 x, 3V, 46 x

    Row 6: 3V, 9 x, 3V, 47 x, 3V, 9 x, 3V, 47 x

    Row 7: 3V, 11 x, 3V, 48 x, 3V, 11 x, 3V, 48 x

In other words, we make increases with three single crochets in the middle stitches of the triple single crochets we made.

The number of single crochets between the triple increases we made increases by two in each row. 1-3-5-7-9-11. You can see it in the photo.

When we complete the 7th row, we have our base. As I said, you can get a wider base by increasing the number of rows. You can also increase the length of the base by increasing the number of chains. This is what the base looks like from the inside of the bag.

If you want to use this base to make a mesh tote bag, you can go to our blog post here. Mesh Tote Bag Recipe
